I would recommend the imaginative approaches to teaching and learning demonstrated by Dragonfly. Their three sessions at this school have been very well received by staff.

All schools are very interested in the concept of how to teach most effectively but some have found that training in this area is either overloaded with theory or too full of buzzwords and jargon – the exact opposite of what is required! This training day is designed to demonstrate very clearly how to utilise the most effective teaching and learning strategies in a real classroom environment.
The course is delivered in a highly practical manner and will interlock sound educational theory with numerous demonstrations of ideas for actual lessons. The emphasis will be on presenting exciting yet academically rigorous teaching strategies that maximise the student’s interest and potential.
Throughout the day, staff will be asked to participate in most activities in order to fully absorb the ideas being put forward. This is hands-on and practical training. These ideas will be demonstrated in a variety of subjects.
• To make all the sessions totally practical and present staff with dozens of actual strategies they can use in the classroom
• To provide a cutting edge synthesis of the latest teaching techniques – the very best of all the latest ideas whilst avoiding clichés and jargon
• To demonstrate a variety of ICT-based strategies that will help inspire your pupils. These are demonstrated on an interactive whiteboard but can be used by teachers who have a projector and laptop. A lunchtime session to explain how to create these is offered
• To demonstrate why effective starters and plenaries are essential plus how to avoid the mid-lesson dip
• To provide a demonstration of the most successful classroom strategies and to debunk a few myths
• To get the pupils doing the work and participating in their learning. This course will show you how to get the pupils doing and thinking more
Session 1: Laying the foundations correctly• Creating a climate for learning. 8 practical ways to make the most of your classroom. Plus, how to turn your classroom into the ‘silent teacher’ • How to get the pupils to help you and themselves. How to get them working effectively • Ongoing revision and constant reinforcement. How and when to do this – the keys to exam success • Effective learning habits for pupils • Effective, entertaining and academically rigorous starters and plenaries |
| Coffee |
Session 2: Doors, walls & roof• How to avoid the mid lesson dip – many practical teaching strategies demonstrated • Effective note-taking from texts • How to use pictures & videos more effectively • Simple to use IT strategies that benefit pupils, not just entertain them • Lots of different ideas for worksheets – yes we still use them! |
| Lunch (voluntary IT session offered for interested staff) |
Session 3: The final touches – this makes all the difference• Activities for learning; Stage 1 you produce – stage 2 they produce. These activities are superb for creating higher order thinking skills • Key words and terminology. All exam boards across all subjects clearly indicate that a sophisticated understanding of key words is essential for exam success • How to engage a variety of learners. It is not the pseudo science of preferred learning styles – it’s variety! More techniques demonstrated • Putting it all together. When is it best for you to teach? When is it best for the pupils to do? |
