Course Description

This course is for: Heads of Year, Heads of House, Key Stage Coordinators and colleagues aspiring to these positions. Form Tutors & learning mentors will also thrive from the CPD experiences offered on this day. It is for anyone who is passionate about pastoral care in our schools. This INSET will give you a crash course into countless excellent and successful ways of being an effective and inspirational member of any pastoral system.

This course can also be offered as a whole-school INSET day. The content can be modified to suit training of the whole staff or key groups, such as Year Team Leaders.

Course objectives

This course aims to:
• Offer strategies to embed excellent pastoral care at the heart your team.
• Identify key aspects of your role, and empower you to help others to become passionate about pastoral care. Giving you ways of moving from fire-fighting to being a strong pastoral leader.
• Suggest ways of motivating the repeat offenders, achieve with the underachievers and celebrate the successful.
• Give practical activities for genuinely valuable tutor times and PSE lessons

Session 1: Setting up the systems

• What is your vision for your students, staff and parents?
• Getting your team to think positively and act creatively
• Creating a positive ethos and raising the aspirations of students and staff
• Setting up systems that work
• How to monitor and evaluate the pastoral area (some sense it is not just data but also observations, work scrutinise, student voice, parent voice etc.) and what do I do with that information
• Keeping on top of the basics: 3 Cs (clothing, chat, chewing)
• Tutor Time - the lost hour?
• PSHE for schools with no PSHE Co-ordinator
