ST THOMAS MORE COLLEGE

This course is specifically designed for any non-teaching staff who work in schools: office staff, technicians, lunchtime supervisors, building services staff, teaching assistants, learning mentors, cover supervisors etc. It is a very practical and down to earth course and is not full of academic mumbo-jumbo It is often difficult enough for teachers to deal effectively with students. For adults working within schools who do not have the "clout" of teacher status it can sometimes feel impossible. The role of support staff within schools is completely different from that of the teacher and requires particular and subtle skills if it is to be carried out effectively. This course gives participants tried and tested strategies for dealing effectively with students, for preventing poor behaviour from occurring and for dealing appropriately with poor pupil behaviour when it does occur.
• To analyse the particular demands placed upon non-teaching
staff in their relationships with students and teachers
• To debate the essential "do’s and don’ts" of dealing effectively
with students and teachers
• To highlight the structures and procedures available to support
staff within schools
• To distinguish between assertive behaviour and aggressive
behaviour
• To identify the causes of pupil disruption
• To analyse how poor pupil behaviour can be prevented from
occurring and how to deal more effectively with it when it does
• To investigate how our own behaviour can affect students’
behaviour
• To give delegates the opportunity to formulate strategies to
avoid/deal with some of their own common problematic pupil
behaviours
