E-Safety for schoolsPrintEmail

“The virtual world opens up new opportunities for learning and creativity, but it also means thinking ahead of new risks” (BECTA)

Schools are keen to embrace these new technologies, but have a responsibility to ensure that their school and their learners are safe while they are using them at school or out of school. It simply isn’t enough to sit back and say – “It’s OK we’ve blocked all these sites…” as they use them at home, on their phones and on other mobile devices.

But are your staff aware of the risks? Do they know and understand what their pupils are doing online and with mobile technologies? Have they thought about their own privacy and use of social networking sites? Have you developed policies for e-safety, acceptable use and for issues involved around cyberbullying both of staff and pupils? Have your staff been trained to recognise when there are issues and how to deal with them?

This half day or full day course will be delivered at your school to staff. It can be a presentation only session -but would work best as a hands on session if the sites (the trainer will let you know which ones in advance) could be unblocked for the session!

The focus can be for KS1/2 or KS3/4 or across the age ranges if need be.

PRICE ON APPLICATION

Price reduction for half day or twilight session.

COURSE OUTLINE

It will involve

• Introduction to Internet Safety
• What our pupils are doing online – demo (or Hands on exploration) of some popular social networking sites
• Mobile phones
• Risks – from strangers, from peers, from pupils
• Cyberbullying issues – recognizing and dealing with it
• The best online and offline resources to use for assemblies, parents meetings and e-safety schemes of work (demo or hands on exploration)
• Ideas and examples to help you develop and update your school’s internet safety policy and acceptable use policies for pupils and staff.
Mary Rebelo has been working with her LA on developing e-safety resources, policies and posters and is part of the e-safety subgroup on their safeguarding children board. She has delivered e-safety training to schools and centres across the country and run parents meetings and e-safety and cyberbullying assemblies to students in many of her local schools.

Schools will receive electronic copies of all website lists, sample policies, assembly and meeting ideas to use and adapt for their own use.
