ALL IN A DAY’S WORK: TEACHING ASSISTANTS IN EARLY YEARS

Questions, Prompts and Thinking Aloud
About this course

Teaching assistants are vital to the success of any school. This is especially true in Early Years.

Being a great assistant teacher (and not just an assistant to the teacher) requires knowledge, skill, hard work, patience and a constant smile. Based on the latest research, this course will help you to be successful in each of these areas – even the constant smile.

On this hands-on, practical and fun day you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop an understanding of the diverse role of the TA/AT;
  • Learn about the latest research and how it can influence your role;
  • Understand how to manage and develop a calm approach to supporting learning;
  • Develop skills of cooperation and collaboration with staff and children.

You will also be introduced to a series of ‘effective interactions’, tools, techniques and tactics you can use to be even more successful. These include:

  • Examining how mindset can impact on children’s behaviour;
  • Giving clear instructions with non-negotiable expectations;
  • Practical strategies to keep the focus on learning;
  • Adult-child interactions – when, why and how to do better;
  • The features of quality adult-child/child-adult dialogue;
  • Problem solving for creative solutions.

Through group discussion you will also be able to share experiences with early years colleagues from across Asia. You will leave the day with a personal action plan and a set of resources you can use in your school the very next day.
